CEBU CITY — The Cebu provincial government will be giving financial assistance to towns and cities to help in their campaign to stop the spread of the deadly 2019 novel coronavirus (2019nCoV).
A total of P25.5 million coming from the province’s disaster fund will be released, said Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, who met town and city mayors in the province last Wednesday to discuss the preparation against the 2019nCoV.

Each LGU was required to declare “state of preparedness” so they could avail of the financial assistance. Because of the threat brought about by the virus, some LGUs have decided to cancel holding public events such as fiestas although Garcia stressed that it will be up to the mayors whether or not to pursue their activities. “It’s on the discretion of the mayors. I trust their judgement because after all, they will be the ones who will be answerable. That is within their jurisdiction, they were elected by their people and the people therefore trusts the leaderships of their local chief executives” said Garcia. For one, the municipality of Consolacion decided to cancel its Sarok Festival and other events as part of its centennial celebration. “I agree with the postponing or suspension of the fiestas in the barangays. That’s one way that would remove us from the bondage of solicitation,” said Balamban Mayor Alex Binghay. Also present in the meeting was Department of Health-Central Visayas (DOH-7) regional director Jaime Bernadas, who asked the public to stay at home if they can. “If you would just go to social conveniences, it’s better to just stay at home,” said Bernadas.
