Cebu province imposes 24-hour curfew for students, elderly

By Calvin Cordova CEBU CITY—A 24-hour curfew for students and senior citizens was enforced in Cebu as part of the measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Executive Order No. 5-K that was issued by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia took effect at 3 p.m. yesterday. The EO stated that “there shall be a 24-hour, province-wide curfew for pre-school, daycare, elementary, college and unemployed post-graduate students and persons aged 65 years old and above.” Persons aged 65 and above with pre-existing medical condition who may need to visit medical facilities are exempted from the 24-hour curfew. Health workers, administrative staff, medical professionals, volunteers of emergency response units, public officials and government workers are exempted from the curfew. Persons travelling across the province are required to bring identification cards. The same EO orders pubs, bars, internet cafes, video gaming arcades, gambling facilities, barbershops, hair salons, tattoo or piercing parlors, aesthetic centers and related personal care services to close shop starting March 24. Home services that violate the social distancing measures are also prohibited. Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Ahong Chan announced yesterday that the city will be implementing the same 24-hour curfew. Also yesterday, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella issued EO No. 59 which he called as “stay at home” order for minors and persons aged 65 and above. Senior citizens “with valid, compelling reasons” will be allowed to leave home, said Labella.
