Cebu City's hospital care facilities now in warning zone

The utilization of the critical care facilities in Cebu City is now under the "warning zone" amid the increasing number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the area, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Tuesday.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the current occupancy rate of the city’s temporary treatment and monitoring facilities is at 13 percent, while the hospital beds utilization rate is at 58 percent.
“In Cebu as of June 21, when we analyzed the data, while only 13 percent of the 19,718 dedicated community isolation beds are occupied, 58 percent of the 1,533 hospital beds are occupied,” said Vergeire in a press briefing.
She also said 56 percent of the city’s intensive care unit beds are occupied and 37 percent of their mechanical ventilators are currently being used.
“Hindi sila nasa critical level . Kasi ang critical level is 70 percent and up. But they are in the warning zone already,” she noted.
Vergeire said that this was one of the reasons why Cebu City was placed under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) until June 30.
“Because their critical care utilization rate is already in that warning zone and we have to make sure na talagang hindi mao-overwhelm ang sistema kaya nagdesisyon ang IATF (Interagency Task Force) noon na dapat mag ECQ ang Cebu City , she said.
Based on the DOH COVID-19 tracker, Central Visayas now has a cumulative total of 5,947 cases as of June 22. Majority of the cases were found in Cebu City with 3,987.
In a previous press briefing, Vergeire said that a team of epidemiologists was sent to Central Visayas, where Cebu City is located, to analyze the situation there. The Health official then noted that they observed that the number of fresh cases in Central Visayas has “exceeded NCR (National Capital Region) in some of the days that we have reported.”
