Caraga region reports first COVID-19 case

By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY – The regional office of the Department of Health-Center for health Development (DOH-CHD) here confirmed Monday morning the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case in Northeastern Mindanao or Caraga region. This was exclusively confirmed by DOH 13 Regional Director Dr. Jose R. Llacuna Jr. to The Manila Bulletin on Monday. The result was forwarded to the region’s top DOH 13 official from the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) Monday morning. Llacuna said the patient was 68-year old male from Butuan City who had diabetes and was also suffering from a form of chronic obstructive lung disease. The patient had travel history to Manila, and returned to Butuan City on March 12, he said. Llacuna said the patient has been confined in one of the major hospitals in Caraga region since March 25. He was initially admitted for fever, sore throat and cough. The region’s top health official appealed to all Caraganons to stay calm even as Caraga region recorded its first COVID-19 positive patient. “Please don’t panic, life goes on and we will confront this virus, and please stay home,” said Llacuna. The DOH 13 Center for Health and Development (CHD) also reported that 8,067 persons under monitoring (PUMs) have already completed their mandatory 14-day quarantine, and were all cleared of COVID-19 infection. As of Monday, only 102 PUMs were still on home quarantine, and under close observation. The DOH 13-CHD also reported that there were 12 remaining patients under investigation (PUIs) in Caraga as of April 5 with four of them currently admitted in government hospitals in the region, and the eight others under strict home quarantine.
