“As a government official and Cabinet member, and as a Filipino, it is my duty to announce that yesterday late afternoon, April 8, 2020, I was informed by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine that I am positive for SARS-COV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19,” Briones said in a statement. Briones said she was tested twice, first on March 13, which came out negative, and the second on April 2, after “another Cabinet member announced that he was tested and declared positive.” “He and I attended an urgent and critical meeting of select Cabinet officials on March 23,” she said. Briones did not specify who the official was but the latest Cabinet member to test positive for COVID was Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Ano. The education secretary said she remains asymptomatic, and her body temperature remains normal as well. Briones said she will continue to work and attend meetings of the InterAgency Task Force “virtually,” while on isolation. “ preside over the DepEd executive committee and management committee, and make all decisions necessary to keep DepEd in full operation,” she added. Briones urged all persons who had physical contact with her to go on “pre-cautionary self-quarantine at home.” “DepEd has coordinated with the DOH for contact tracing and other necessary interventions following their protocols,” she said.
