BJMP PDLs and officers contribute in the fight against COVID-19

By Chito Chavez The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on April 13, Monday, lauded the persons deprived of liberty (PDL) under their care for joining the government’s efforts in its fight against the novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). BJMP Chief Jail Director Allan Iral said PDLs are giving their free services for the fabrication and sewing of face shields and other protective equipment needed by frontline health workers. With regard to fighting COVID-19 in its facilities, Iral noted that the BJMP is continually monitoring the condition of 21 PDLs who are now in isolation and have been swabbed for testing. BJMP spokesman Chief Inspector Xavier Solda said they are only waiting for the results of the COVID-19 tests for the said PDLs. Solda cited the effectiveness of the measures being undertaken by the BJMP, noting that the agency currently has zero COVID-19 cases among PDLs. He said the BJMP has implemented “proactive distance toward COVID-19,” as ordered by Iral. Solda also stressed the importance of following health protocols anchored strictly on the guidelines set by the Department of Health (DOH). He also gave credence to the BJMP’s strong collaboration with the “justice sector, private sector, and other agencies under the interior sector.” With personal visitations prohibited because of the lockdown, Solda cited Rep. Juan Fidel Felipe Nograles, vice-chairperson of the House Committee on Justice, for donating 25 sets of computers that will be used for “Electronic Dalaw (visit)’’ for PDLs. Currently, Solda said the BJMP has 14,875 personnel manning the 468 district, city, and municipal jails in the country. Salary donations Meanwhile, all BJMP personnel will donate a portion of their salaries to support the national government’s efforts against COVID-19. The amount will be deducted from the salary of jail officers next month. Every organic personnel of the bureau—from the BJMP chief to the lowest ranking officers (jail officer 1)—will donate a portion of their salaries. From 1.5% of each personnel’s base pay, the total amount to salary donated is expected to be at least P7.23 million, which will be turned over to the Office of the Civil Defense. “We hope that this amount could somehow reinforce the needed support to help our people, especially health workers who are at the frontlines,” said Iral. “This is on top of initiatives our personnel in the field to help their respective localities,” he added.
