BFAR7 makes fish products available at DA-Kadiwa market

CEBU CITY—The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-7) in Central Visayas has tied up with the Department of Agriculture in Region 7 (DA-7) here to make fishery products available at the Kadiwa market here.

This would assist local fish vendors who would be able to sell their products in Mandaue City and other areas outside of Cebu City.
Kadiwa is a food market system that sells primary agricultural goods at low prices to help marginalized households.
The local Kadiwa market is located inside the DA-7 regional office in Estancia, Mandaue City that was launched at the onset of the lockdown and enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) due to COVID-19 and continues to be open every Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There are 22 farmers from Cebu City that sell assorted agri-products and now with the BFAR-7 collaboration, the Cebu City Government - Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) selected fish vendors to sell fishery products at the Kadiwa Center.
By April 16, BFAR-7 will start to deploy its reefer van to ferry the fish products from Cebu to Mandaue.
According to BFAR-7 regional information officer Alma Saavedra that this move was in response to the issues raised by the fish vendors from Pasil, Cebu City that they were suffering from the slow fish trade at the landing center and wet markets when lockdown and ECQ were implemented.
Saavedra said fish traders, dealers and customers have had a hard time entering Cebu City to purchase fishery products since stringent measures were being imposed everywhere in the city.
With this initiative, BFAR-7 will be assisting fish vendors to improve their income and make fishery products accessible and available to the customers within the cities of Cebu and Mandaue, Saavedra added.
Saavedra also said BFAR-7 was working to resolve the problem not only on food availability and accessibility, but also on the affordability of the products as market stakeholders agreed to sell their products at suggested retail prices.
