Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso said some barangay officials were not able to hand out the cash aid to some families who either went home to their provinces, or stayed at their workplaces or other areas where a lockdown is imposed, resulting in the excess money.
Some families were also listed as recipients twice, Domagoso said in his city address Thursday evening.
The local chief executive lauded the barangay officials for their honesty and for exerting effort in distributing the cash relief.
"Matutuwa ka kasi pinakikita nila 'yung kabutihang loob, talagang pagmamalasakit sa kapwa, at pagpapahalaga sa resources ng pamahalaan (You would be glad because they showed their kindness, concern for their fellow people, and appreciation for the government's resources)," he said.
"Maraming salamat sa katapatan ninyo, mga barangay officials. Maraming salamat sa pagpupursigi ninyo. Maraming salamat sa tulong ninyo na abutin natin, at magsama-sama tayo, magtulong-tulong tayong taong pamahalaan, mga halal ng bayan, na patuloy na maging tapat sa ating tungkulin at tupdin ang sinumpaang obligasyon at responsibilidad (Thank you very much to the barangay officials for your honesty, perseverance, and help in reaching all our constituents. Let us unite and help each other, duly elected public officials, to continue being honest with our duties and fulfill our sworn obligations and responsibilities)," he added.
The city mayor said they have already distributed the P1,000-financial assistance to 576,133 in 896 barangays, exceeding their initial target of 568,000 families, as of Thursday evening.
City Ordinance No. 8625 authorizes the allocation of a P591-million supplemental budget to provide financial aid to about 568,000 families in light of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) crisis.
The ordinance states that the fund was sourced from the Office of the Mayor, Manila Department of Social Welfare, and the City Development Fund.
Earlier, Domagoso said that they set aside some beautification projects by the city government to prioritize funding for the CACAF.
Those who wish to check if their barangay officials have already received the CACAF can go to the city mayor's Facebook page, he said.
