Aid pours in for arrested 'PISTON 6'

  By Joseph Almer Pedrajas People have started extending their assistance to the six jeepney drivers, mostly elderly, who were arrested and detained for staging a protest in Caloocan City, and called on authorities to immediately release them. (PISTON via Twitter / MANILA BULLETIN) (PISTON via Twitter / MANILA BULLETIN) Commission on Elections Commissioner Rowena Guanzon on Thursday night said that she has assigned a lawyer to coordinate with the lawyer of the drivers, who are now collectively called the "PISTON 6." Guanzon also enjoined social media users to donate for the bail of the drivers while she, too, will shell out her own money for their financial needs. 2019 Bar topnotcher Mae Diane Azores also took the lead to expedite the release of "PISTON 6" release from a custodial facility of the city police and coordinated with their lawyer, Henry Enaje. Azores said even if she wants to represent the drivers, she can't because she has yet to take her oath. "Just to clarify po, I am not yet allowed to represent the drivers because I need to take my oath and sign the roll first. But we can all help in our own little way for the meantime," she said. Calls for the urgent release of "PISTON 6" continue on Friday as the drivers might have to spend the weekend behind bars should the resolution of their case fail to be released. The drivers -- Elmer Cordero, 72, Severino Ramos, 59; Wilson Ramilia, 43; Ramon Paloma, 48; Ruben Baylon, 59; and Arsenio Ymas Jr, 56, have been in jail for three days now. The Caloocan Police said that the six violated the prohibition against "non-essential" mass gathering and committed "resistance and disobedience to a person in authority." PISTON 6's arrest came after they held a protest along EDSA on Tuesday to call for the resumption of their operations in Metro Manila as they no longer have money to buy food.
