AFP builds emergency quarantine facilities to aid COVID-19 hospitals

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has built emergency quarantine facilities (EQFs) to support hospitals attending to patients of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), it said on Friday.

The AFP Engineering Office, in partnership with a private architecture firm, completed one unit EQF unit and turned it over to La Consolacion University General Hospital (LCUGH) in Poblacion, Bulacan.
Brigadier General William Ilagan, chief of the AFP Engineering Office, said the air-conditioned EQF could accommodate 15 patients.
"The EQF is designed for hospitals and institutions that are at maximum capacity to provide proper facility for patients who need to be quarantined," Ilagan said.
The facility is a project of WTA Architecture + Design Studio. It was funded through the firm's "We Build As One" project.
The facility was completed through the efforts of the Office of The Chief Engineer, AFP led by Ilagan with the help from the 355th Aviation Engineering Wing of the Philippine Air Force.
According to Ilagan, the LCUGH has one probable and one suspected COVID-19 cases as of Thursday. It currently accepts patients with mild symptoms.
The WTA studio said it is building a total of EQFs within and outside Metro Manila. On its 28th day of construction, it has completed 39 EQFs while 23 are still being built by the firm and the military.
Meanwhile, the AFP also received donations consisting of 20,000 surgical masks; 20,000 pairs of surgical gloves; 4,000 piece of 125ml disinfecting alcohol; 1,000 pieces of adjustable protective eye wear; and 41,600 canned goods.
General Felimon T. Santos Jr., AFP Chief, presided the turn-over ceremony of the donations from anonymous donors in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
"The leadership salutes our gracious donors who heeded the call for humanity and patriotism. They contributed to the battle against COVID-19 out of a sincere desire to help the country’s imperiled front liners, expecting no fanfare or recognition in return," Santos said.
"Their example, which is worthy of emulation, would surely inspire our men and women on the ground to better perform their duties towards winning the fight against the virus," he added.
