949 OFWs return to Negros Occidental in first week of repatriation

BACOLOD CITY - A total of 949 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) arrived here and in Negros Occidental in the first week of repatriation via sweeper flights and 2Go Malasakit Voyage from May 25 to June 1.

Of this number, 601 were residents of various cities and municipalities in the province, while 348 were from Bacolod. They returned home after being stranded in Manila and Cebu during the community quarantine brought by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, during a press briefing at the Provincial Capitol on Tuesday, said that 453 passengers, including an infant, were brought home through sweeper flights; 24 others arrived home via a Philippine Air Force C-130 aircraft at the Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City; and 116 individuals arrived in the province via sea travel at the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. (Bredco) port here. He said that these persons were those stranded in Manila.
Lacson also said that eight other repatriates from Cebu arrived at the port of Escalante City.
In Bacolod City, the city government has recorded a total of 299 OFW repatriates from May 25 to 29.
In addition to the said figure, 12 residents arrived at the airport via an AirAsia sweeper flight last Monday, and 37 others arrived over the weekend via air and sea travel.
The returning OFWs were brought to hotels, tourist inns, and pension houses in the city for their mandatory 14-day quarantine, upon the respective agreements of the city and the province with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
The repatriation of OFWs is ongoing, pursuant to a resolution of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) issued on May 25 that more than 24,000 OFWs in Metro Manila, who come from various regions, would be transported at an estimate of 8,000 persons per day to different provinces and cities.
