54 PCG personnel tested positive for COVID-19 but many have already recovered

  By Betheena Unite A total of 54 Coast Guard personnel have tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) but majority of them have already recovered, the organization’s top official bared Friday, June 26. Vice Admiral George Ursabia, Jr., Philippine Coast Guard commandant, said that at present, a total of 54 employees tested positive for the disease but 42 have already recovered from the illness, while the rest are recuperating. “There are 12 that are still recovering. Majority naman ay asymptomatic and we are optimistic na gagaling silang lahat. (Majority of them are asymptomatic and we are optimistic that they will all recover),” Ursabia said during a televised press briefing. “We implement strict PPE (personal protective equipment) wearing. We subsidize their meals to ensure that they eat nutritious food and we give them vitamins to boost their immune system,” the commandant added referring to the Coast Guard’s efforts for its personnel. He furthered that they have been observing bio safety protocols in their operations and launched program to strengthen psychosocial support of Coast Guard employees. Regular RT-PCR testing for frontliners is also conducted to make sure that they are free from COVID-19. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard will continue to ferry locally stranded individuals in Metro Manila to Visayas and Mindanao. “Pagbalik (ng BRP Gabriela Silang), another trip hanggang maubos ang LSI bound for Visayas and Mindanao (There will be another trip once the BRP Gabriela Silang returns until all LSIs are brought back to Visayas and Mindanao),” Ursabia said. The BRP Gabriela Silang is currently in transit to provinces in Visayas and Mindanao to ferry LSIs, police officers, and medical supplies for frontliners. It departed Manila Thursday, its second time to transport stranded individuals from the National Capital Region. As of Friday afternoon, BRP Gabriela Silang arrived in Cebu City to disembark the 108 members of the Philippine National Police- Special Action Force for deployment. Medical supplies and equipment were also brought to the city.
