In the span of only less than a month, the total number of fatalities among Filipinos infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Dubai has increased from 23 to 40, Philippine Consul General Paul Raymond Cortes confirmed on Friday.
This development came as the United Arab Emirates is now gradually reopening businesses, especially in the entertainment and tourism sectors where many Filipinos are employed.
“Last week, we have recorded about 40 of our kababayans who succumbed to COVID-19,” Cortes said during an interview at the Laging Handa briefing.
On May 8, 2020, Cortes reported that 23 Filipinos in Dubai have died after being infected with the coronavirus.
Based on the latest tally by the online COVID-19 monitoring platform Worldometer, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UAE is 32,532 with 258 deaths and 16,685 recoveries.
The Consul General attributed the increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to the mass testing conducted by the Emirates where about 15 to 20 percent of the 10 million population have already been tested.
Despite the business reopening and the shortening of curfew hours, Cortes advised Filipinos in Dubai to observe the strict hygiene protocol and sterilization being implemented by the UAE government to mitigate the spread of the disease.
Cortes said the consulate continues to receive requests for assistance from Filipinos affected by the pandemic, mostly the undocumented and those under the “no-work, no-pay” scheme.
He assured that the consulate and the embassy are open to receive requests as they continue to dispense various assistance programs through the representatives of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the form of cash or food items.
Around 2,000 to 3,000 Filipinos are awaiting repatriation flights back to Manila, according to Cortes.
The UAE is the second favored destination of OFWs in the Middle East, next only to Saudi Arabia. Approximately 650,000Filipinos are currently working in the Emirates, according to the latest figures provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
