Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary and spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said on Wednesday that 29 Metro Manila barangay chairmen are in hot water for failing to impose quarantine protocols aimed at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19).
DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya,
(PCOO / MANILA BULLETIN) He said in an interview with DZMM that the barangay chairmen were either negligent or lax in maintaining proper social distancing and enforcing crowd control. When confronted with these apparent violations, Malaya said that the barangay chairman admitted having difficulty in enforcing quarantine rules. Malaya said the concerned barangay officials were given 48 hours from yesterday to answer to the show-cause orders. “The officials might face administrative and criminal charges,’’ Malaya said. Earlier, the DILG also issued show-cause orders against three governors and two mayors for violation of quarantine regulations. Emphasizing that no one is above the law, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año warned that he will not have second thoughts in having erring local officials suspended, sacked or even prohibited from running in any elective position in the future, if warranted. This came about after two erring barangay chairman from Quezon City and Caloocan City were admonished by the DILG and issued show-cause orders for the same violation.
