20 arrested for violating hard lockdown in Sampaloc

  By Jean Fernando Around 20 individuals were apprehended during the first few hours of the 48-hour “hard lockdown” implemented in Sampaloc District in Manila due to the rapid increase of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the area. According to the Public Information Office, the 20 individuals were apprehended from midnight to about 4 a.m after they were found loitering and without quarantine pass. The apprehended individuals were brought to the district's covered courts where they spent the night. Sampaloc District is composed of 192 barangays with more or less 300,000 residents. It was placed under hard lockdown by Mayor Isko Moreno starting 8:00 p.m. last Thursday and will last until 8:00 p.m. of Saturday due to the exceedingly high number of COVID-19 cases. Moreno also ordered the setting up of 31 control points in the district which are being manned by hundreds of policemen and soldiers. Under the said hard lockdown, all residents in the said district are not allowed to go out of their respective residences except government employees, health care workers, service workers in pharmacies, drug stores and funeral parlors, police and military, barangay officials and media practitioners. Operation and activities of those not indicated in the exemption like commercial, industrial, institutional and other institutions in the Sampaloc district were suspended during the hard lockdown.
