2 more quakes rock Northern Luzon


VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur – Two more earthquakes rocked Northern Luzon hours after a magnitude-4.7 tremor hit the region on Sunday, March 26.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude-4.9 earthquake struck at 8:38 p.m. Its epicenter was four kilometers northwest of San Isidro, Abra with a depth of 12 kilometers.

It was felt at Intensity 5 felt in Bucay, Abra;

Intensity 4 in Bangued, Bucloc, Dolores, La Paz, Lacub, Lagangilang, Lagayan, Luba, Malibcong, Pidigan, Pilar, San Isidro, San Quintin, Tayum, Tineg, Tubo, and Villaviciosa, Abra;  Besao, Sadanga, and Sagada, Mountain Province; Banayoyo, Burgos, Galimuyod, Lidlidda, Nagbukel, Narvacan, Quirino, San Emilio, San Esteban, Santa, Sigay, Sugpon, and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur;

Intensity 3 in Licuan-Baay, Abra; Atok, Bakun, Buguias, and Mankayan, Benguet; Bauko and Tadian, Mountain Province; Bantay, City of Candon, Caoayan, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Narvacan, and Santiago, Ilocos Sur;

Intensity 2 in Baguio City; Itogon, Kapangan, and Kibungan, Benguet; City of Batac, Ilocos Norte; Cabugao, Magsingal, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Santa Cruz, Santa Lucia, Sinait, and Tagudin, Ilocos Sur;

Intensity 1 in Paoay and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and Peñablanca, Cagayan.

Eight hours earlier at 12:43 p.m., magnitude-4.1 earthquake hit Batanes.

Its epicenter was located 58 kilometers northwest of Itbayat with a depth of 20 kilometers. Phivolcs reported no intensity.

The first quake that struck Northern Luzon on Sunday was recorded at 5:35 a.m.

Phivolcs said the quakes were tectonic in origin and did not have any aftershock but it can damage properties and structures.

The Region 1 Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) advised residents in the region to take extra precautions and be vigilant about the quakes’ impact.
