Special polls in Tubaran, Lanao Sur eyed on May 24

The special elections in several barangays in Tubaran, Lanao del Sur may be held on May 24.

"Under Section 7 of the Omnibus Election Code, we have to be sure that the cause of the failure of election should have cease first. That's why our projection is May 24 for the special elections in Tubaran," Comelec Acting Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said in a press briefing Saturday, May 14.

"Right now the situation there is contained. Violence has been quelled and controlled, and all preparations are being done in order to pursue the special elections," he added.

"For Tubaran, no need to print the ballots, no need to prepare the VCMs. All of these are with us and intact," said Laudiangco.

The poll body on May 11 declared failure of elections in 14 barangays in the municipalities of Butig, Binadayan, and Tubaran in Lanao del Sur.

The Comelec en banc decided to adopt the recommendation of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Regional Election Director Ray Sumalipao to declare failure of polls in said areas involving more than 40 clustered precincts.

Failure of elections was declared in the 12 barangays in Tubaran due to violence, threats and intimidation.
