MMDA says Macapagal Blvd closure is to give way to Leni's grand rally, not for harassment
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Thursday, April 21, that the closure of Macapagal Boulevard is meant to give way to the grand birthday campaign rally of Vice President and presidential candidate Leni Robredo.
In a statement, the MMDA said it expects the road to be occupied by Robredo supporters on April 23, Saturday.
The grand campaign rally is touted to be the biggest for Robredo, with supporters floating the idea that at least 500,000 people are expected to join.
But speculations on harassment cropped up in the past days after heavy equipment were sent to the area for road repair.
This was further triggered by the announcement of road closure.
But the MMDA said the The road closure was not in anyway intended to prevent supporters of Robredo from attending the grand rally.
"Macapagal Blvd. was closed partially to vehicular traffic as the stage was so big that only one lane is passable on one side," the statement read.
" It will be closed on the rally day itself as it will be entirely occupied by supporters. The following day, Sunday, it will again be closed to allow dismantling of the stage,"It added.
The MMDA said the road closure by the rally organizers themselves and the local government of Pasay City.
"MMDA's only participation is traffic management and to announce the road closure to the public so that motorists can avoid the area," the MMDA said.
"The early closure of Macapagal Blvd. goes against our policy of not allowing political activities on major roads on weekdays. But we tolerated it so as not to be accused of being bias. Thus, accusations to the contrary is unfair to the agency and the organizer should explain this matter to their supporters," it added.
