Marcos wallops Robredo in 25 of 27 provinces in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY – In 2016 elections, then vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo dominated the race in Mindanao as she won in four of the six regions, namely, Zamboanga, Northern Mindanao, Caraga and the then Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Robredo was eventually proclaimed vice president, something that her opponent then, Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., had protested because of alleged massive cheating. Marcos had even sought a recount to no avail, and the controversy lingered on.

Now, six years hence, the political landscape has dramatically changed. What seemed like a vindication of sorts, presumptive President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. dominated the entire Mindanao region in this year’s presidential race.

Based on the partial and unofficial results in the Commission on Elections transparency server as of May 13, Marcos walloped Robredo in 25 out of 27 provinces in Mindanao, with the UniTeam’s standard bearer losing only in the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Sarangani.

In Lanao del Sur, presidential aspirant Faisal Mangudato garnered 143, 043 votes while Marcos got 107,544 votes and Robredo 103,963 votes. As could be noted, this was the only province in Mindanao where the Mangundato, Marcos and Robredo figured in close contests.

Marcos made a good account of himself in the Soccsksargen Region (Region 12) which is composed of the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato province, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City. Here, Marcos received 1,266, 799 votes followed by Senator Manny Pacquiao with 398, 122 votes, including 82,246 votes in his home province of Sarangani.

In the home region of running mate Sara Duterte, Marcos walloped his rivals particularly in Davao del Sur after he garnered 915, 026 votes followed by Pacquiao with 50,607 votes and Robredo with 50, 219 votes.

In Davao del Norte -- which is said to be the bailiwick of former house speaker Pantaleon Alvarez that dumped presidential bet Ping Lacson and switched to Robredo – Marcos thumped the incumbent vice president with 470, 567 votes. Robredo only got 39,373 votes.

In the Moro Islamic Liberation Front-led Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Marcos got 1,005,768 votes against Robredo’s 432, 237 votes.

Except for Lanao del Sur, where Mangudato dominated, Marcos won in the provinces of Basilan, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-tawi.

The MILF leadership, through its political group United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) had endorsed Robredo as their presidential bet.

The endorsement may have helped Robredo narrow the gap in their traditional bailiwick in Maguindanao province where Marcos earned 300,518 votes and the incumbent president garnered 254, 840 votes, or a difference of 45, 678 votes.

Closest gap

Aside from Maguindanao, Marcos and Robredo fought closely in Agusan del Sur, with the former Senator getting 152,029 votes, and Robredo 144,176 votes.

During the 2016 vice presidential race, Robredo walloped Marcos with 151, 451 votes as the former only got 48, 494 votes in Maguindanao.

In the adjacent Agusan del Norte, the presumptive president earned 282,746 votes while Robredo got 43, 031 votes.

In the Northern Mindanao region, which Robredo dominated in 2016, Marcos got 620, 031 votes in Misamis Oriental. Pacquiao had even outscored Robredo here, 101, 583 votes to 92,08

Marcos also topped Misamis Occidental, getting 254, 066 votes followed by Pacquiao with 46, 153 votes and Robredo 32, 804 votes.

Marcos also showed the way in Zamboanga Peninsula – which Robredo had dominated in 2016 – garnering over a million votes from the region’s three provinces (Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur) and four cities (Dapitan, Dipolog, Pagadian, Isabela) and the highly urbanized Zamboanga City.

In an utterly sharp contrast, Robredo fared miserably in Zamboanga Peninsula, finishing third behind Pacquiao.

Marcos earned 273, 177 votes in Zamboanga del Norte while Pacquiao 134, 291 votes and then Robredo with 103, 253 votes.

In Zamboanga del Sur, Marcos got 576, 171 while Pacquiao earned 125, 058 votes. The incumbent vice president garnered 112, 821.

And then in Zamboanga Sibugay, Marcos walloped Pacquiao with 168, 271 votes against 85,414 votes while Robredo got just 46,147.
