Comelec vows to go after fake news peddlers through prospective task force

Individuals spreading false information about the poll body thus destroying the integrity of the electoral process will be prosecuted by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), it said on Monday, April 4.

During the Laging Handa public briefing, Commissioner George Garcia said that he is convincing the Commission En Banc to create a task force against fake news.
"Hindi po natin papayagan (We will not allow it), we will go after them, we will prosecute them, and we will put a stop to this illegal activities po," he said.
Garcia said that they would want to go after fake news such as those concerning the so-called pre-shaded original ballots that got out of the National Printing Office (NPO). There are also videos according to him, claiming that the election is already over claiming that voter turnout was at 100 percent.
He stated that information such as these may be perceived by other people who have access to social media sites spreading it to be true. He added that they will not allow the integrity of the electoral process to be destroyed.
In a DZBB interview, Garcia said that they will always seek the assistance of both the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in going after people responsible for spreading false information about the poll body and the electoral process.
"We will never allow that, kanda-hirap na po lahat ng sektor, pati po kayo, pati po iyong mga kapatid natin sa pamamahayag, para lang ayusin ang eleksyon (all sectors have been having a hard time, even you members of the media, to ensure a decent election)," Garcia said.
Officers and employees of Comelec, according to Garcia don't even have time to rest working for the elections and all of a sudden it will just be tarnished by false information.
He clarified that this will only be limited to the poll body as well as the entire electoral process and does not include the political candidates.
"Iyon pong fake news para sa mga kandidato, naku, napakadami po noon, baka hindi na po namin kayanin iyon, dapat po talaga isang buong departamento ng pamahalaan iyan (The fake news on candidates, that's too many we might not be able to handle that, there should be a government department for that)," he added.
