Pasig City hosted the World Tuberculosis (TB) Day celebration held on Friday, March 24, in collaboration with the Department of Health (DOH) and the United Nations Agency for International Development (USAID).
According to the City Health Department (CHD), Pasig was the venue chosen by the DOH among the cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) to celebrate the occasion.

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto attended the event and expressed his support for the causes and efforts done to reduce and eliminate TB cases in the city. He assured TB patients of the local government’s commitment to continuously improve and provide high-quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare services to his constituents. Among the guest speakers during the program were CHD Assistant City Health Officer Dr. Emma Ruth Cuevas, Pasig National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTP) medical coordinator Dr. Glendon Sumayao, and Pasig Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) coordinator Dr. Ben Evan Niog. They shared their messages and led brief discussions on the collaboration between the TB and diabetes control programs of Pasig. Other attendees were representatives from the Department of Health - Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD), USAID and the Philippine Business for Social Progress.

The local government invited around 100 members of the Sweet Diabetic Club of Pasig Inc. to partake in the events’ activities at the CHAMP Wellness Clinic in Pasig City. The participants joined a zumba dance session early on in the program. They also availed of the free services offered at the event, including the fasting blood sugar screening, chest x-ray, and Truenat examination. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), TB is an infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, which commonly affects the lungs (pulmonary TB) but can also impact other organs in the body (extra-pulmonary TB). The [WHO’s Global Tuberculosis Report 2022](https://www.who.int/teams/global-tuberculosis-programme/tb-reports/global-tuberculosis-report-2022) states that “10.6 million people fell ill with TB in 2021, an increase of 4.5% from 10.1 million in 2020.” In the Philippines, “an estimated 599,000 people fell ill with TB in 2019, 373,000 (62 percent) were men, 157,000 (26 percent) women and 69,000 (12 percent) children,” as per the [DOH’s National TB Report 2021.](https://ntp.doh.gov.ph/download/ntp-annual-report-2021/) The Pasig CHD said that TB is one of the most widespread diseases in Pasig in 2022. The city recorded over 5,000 cases of TB across their 30 barangays. The CHD urged citizens to contact and coordinate with their barangay health centers to get checked and treated for TB.
