BATANGAS – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Batangas released a maritime advisory allowing the resumption of leisure activities along coastal waters of Verde Island on Saturday, March 25.
The advisory released at around 8 a.m. on March 25 cited the prompt response of the PCG, local government unit-Batangas, and other volunteers in the containment and cleanup operation prevented the spread of oily mixtures throughout the shoreline of Barangay San Agapito, Barangay San Agustin-Kankuran, Liponpon, and San Andres area of Verde Island. The advisory added that swimming, diving, and any other sorts of leisure activities are now allowed in said barangays. The PCG-Batangas though reminded all tows to contact their sub-stations or barangays closest to them to report any traces of oil or oil sheens. The oil spill was caused by the M/T Princess Empress that sank off the coast of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro on Feb. 28, 2023. The oil spill easily spread into Tablas Strait. As of March 20, the oil sheens and thin patch of segmented oil have reached with minimal impact the area of Verde Island.
