PNP: CIDG raids sugar mill belonging to ex-Negros Oriental gov Pryde Teves; firearms seized
A sugar mill allegedly belonging to former Negros Oriental Governor Pryde Henry Teves was raided by elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Friday, March 24, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
Police Col. Jean Fajardo, PNP spokesperson, said CIDG operatives swooped down on the compound of HDJ Bayawan Agriventures in Brgy. Caranoche, Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental.
The operation was covered by a search warrant for alleged violation of Republic Act 10591 or the "Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act" reportedly issued by a court in Mandaue City.
“Mayroon tayong isang impormante na lumapit sa PNP at nagsasabi na ito nga pong compound na ito ay dito itinatago at mayroon pong pag-iingat na mga high-powered firearms na makikita (An informant approached the PNP and revealed that high-powered firearms are being kept in this compound),” Fajardo said.
“Isa sa subject ng warrant ay ‘yung HDJ Bayawan Agriventures na kung saan base sa records ay ang tumatayong presidente diyan ay si Mr. Pryde Henry Teves (One of the subjects of the warrant is the HDJ Bayawan Agriventures which, based on records, is headed by its president, Mr. Pryde Henry Teves),” she added.
The camp of former governor Teves, who was reportedly not present when the raid was carried out, has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, Fajardo stated that the inventory of the seized firearms was ongoing but reports said at least 10 high-powered guns were found in the compound.
“Initially, I was informed by people on the ground na may mga nakuhang mga baril at iba pa pong ammunition (that there were firearms and ammunition seized),” she noted.
“Mayroon na tayong mga tao na under custody ngayon at sila ay ipi-present natin sa pagsasagawa ng inquest proceedings (We have certain individuals placed under custody and we will present them during the conduct of inquest proceedings),” Fajardo said without divulging further details on the identities of personalities taken by the CIDG.
However, the police official could not say whether the operation was connected or not to the investigation on the killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo and eight others in Pamplona town last March 4.
“Wala pa tayong impormasyon kung ito ba ay related sa Degamo case (We have no information yet if this is related to the Degamo case). But based on the information provided to us, may isa nga tayong informant at isang witness na nagsasabi at nagbigay ng impormasyon na mayroon nga pong itinatago na matataas na kalibre ng baril sa nasabing compound (we have an informant and a witness saying and giving information that there are high-caliber firearms being kept in the compound),” Fajardo stressed.
Last March 10, the PNP-CIDG also raided a compound belonging to Negros Oriental Third District Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. where several high-powered firearms and explosives were seized by the authorities. Pryde Henry and Arnolfo are brothers.
In October 2022, Pryde stepped down as the governor of Negros Oriental after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) nullified his win against Degamo in the May 2022 gubernatorial race.
This, after the Comelec en banc decided to credit the 49,953 votes obtained by nuisance candidate “Ruel Degamo” to Roel Degamo, who obtained 281,773 votes. Roel’s total votes became 331,726 which were enough to surpass Pryde’s 301,319 votes.
Meanwhile, Arnolfo was being linked to Degamo’s assassination although the embattled lawmaker has repeatedly denied any involvement in the crime.
