Most Filipinos agree with living wage, EDSA free ride, basic goods SRP, wealth tax — survey

Four out of 32 national issues are the “most approved” by Filipinos in the latest Publicus Asia survey released on March 23. Based on the results of the “Pahayag 2023 First Quarter Survey,” the most approved national issues were the establishment of living wage (79 percent), continuation of the “libreng sakay” (free ride) program in EDSA (78 percent), imposition of suggested retail price or SRP on basic commodities (77 percent), and tax on rich/wealth tax (76 percent). Meanwhile, seven out of 10 Filipinos agree with the establishment of a Visiting Forces Agreement with Japan (69 percent) and the suspension of collection of higher PhilHealth premium in 2023 (65 percent). Moreover, between 53 to 60 percent of Filipinos approve of repealing oil excise tax (60 percent), mandatory ROTC program for college students (57 percent), revision of economic provisions of the current Constitution (55 percent), construction of nuclear power plants in the country (54 percent), declaration of more long weekends to boost domestic tourism (54 percent), imposition of a tax on foreign digital services like Netflix (54 percent), and President Marcos’ announcement to allow four US bases in the country to help in case the Taiwan Strait conflict erupts. Publicus said the “less popular” topics with only about four out of 10 Filipinos in agreement were the approval of the Lower House Committee to use Constitutional Convention or ConCon as a method to amend the Constitution (45 percent), importation of onion and sugar (43 percent), transition to federal form of government (42 percent), temporary closure of PNR Line from Tutuban to Calamba (41 percent), and delisting of 800,000 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or 4Ps beneficiaries (40 percent). The least of all topics, with only about two to three out of 10 Filipinos approving, were the shift to Parliamentary government (35 percent); privatization of MRT-3, NAIA, and EDSA Bus Carousel (33 percent), passage of SOGIE Bill or the Anti-Discrimination Bill (31 percent), increase of SSS Employee’s share (29 percent), and fare hike in LRT and MRT (22 percent). The survey revealed that the top issues that President Marcos need to focus on remained the same. These are issues on the economy, rising prices and inflation, corruption, and poverty and jobs. The “Pahayag 2023 First Quarter Survey” was conducted from March 2 to 6, with 1,500 adult respondents nationwide.
