Mayor Joy recognizes QC traffic enforcer killed in road accident for bravery, heroism
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte commended the traffic enforcer (TE) who died after a trailer truck hit and run over him along A. Bonifacio Avenue, Barangay Balingasa last Wednesday, March 22, for showing bravery and heroism while performing his duty.
“We salute the bravery and heroism of Traffic Enforcer Jeffrey Antolin of our Quezon City Traffic and Transport Management Department. TE Antolin went above and beyond the call of duty, sacrificing his life to save a pedestrian, while manning traffic at a pedestrian crossing along A. Bonifacio Avenue in the afternoon of 22 March 2023,” the mayor said in a statement on Thursday, March 23.
The incident happened in front of a mall in the area at around 5:30 p.m. on the said day, according to the Quezon City Police District.
“TE Antolin was directing the heavy flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the said area, when a pedestrian who was crossing A. Bonifacio Avenue was about to get hit by a loaded trailer truck, the driver of which failed to follow TE Antolin's hand signals. TE Antolin quickly reacted by pushing the pedestrian out of harm’s way, but unfortunately was himself hit and run-over by the trailer truck,” Belmonte said.
The traffic enforcer was rushed to a hospital but later died.
The truck driver, identified as Joel Dimacali, will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, police said.
Belmonte and the Quezon City Government expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Antolin and assured that they will provide the assistance they need during their time of grief.
She said that they will also ensure that the trailer truck driver, owner, or whoever is found responsible for the incident will be held accountable and penalized to the fullest extent of the law.
“The supreme sacrifice and heroism of TE Antolin serves as an inspiration to everyone in the Quezon City Government. We thank him and his family for his service to the people of Quezon City,” the mayor added.
