ILAGAN CITY – Fil-Heritage tracksters Lauren Hoffman and Robyn Brown engaged in a thrilling neck-and-neck race in the last stretch of the 400-meter hurdles final to complete a 1-2 finish in the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championship on a hot Friday afternoon at the City of Ilagan Sports Complex here.
Hoffman, though, came through with 57.56 seconds time, a full stride clear of closest pursuer in PH record-holder and Southeast Asian games bronze medalist Brown who ended the race in 57.81s. Both finishes were just a little over a second short of the national mark of 56.44s which Brown set during the Hanoi games. Far third in the race was Nguyen Thi Ngoc with a time of 1:00.90s. Hoffman has now bagged her second medal in the annual trackfest after also winning the silver in the 110m hurdles on Thursday, March 23. The Fil-American hurdler, who also plays for the Duke Blue Devils in the US NCAA and traces her roots in Navotas City, heaved a sigh of relief after overcoming the tough challenge from her opponents right on her first stint in the country. “I knew she was the record holder coming into this, so I was just going to try to stay with her, try to pass her when I can, so yeah, she did a great job. All the ladies did,” Hoffman said of Brown. “She was in my heat. I could feel her pressing in the prelims. I could feel her just, like, behind me for that first stretch, so I was just trying to get out, stay ahead of her. Yeah, but she's a great competitor also,” she added, this time, refering to her Vietnamese counterpart. Hoffman though certainly craves for more success under the Philippine flag as she hopes to replicate her personal best of 55.47 seconds – a record that even eclipses Brown’s national mark. Meanwhile in the men’s race, University of the Philippines’ Marjun Sulleza topped the race with 54.88s ahead of Alexander Obejas (55.49s) of National University and Nguyen Duc Son (55.51s) of Vietnam. Elsewhere, Asian Indoor Athletics Championship bronze medalist Janry Ubas made a successful jump for the gold medal in the men’s open elite long jump event after making a 7.84 leap to beay Algin Gomez (7.84) of Mapua and Muhammad Isham (7.39). Another national team veteran in Melvin Calano also displayed his championship form for a golden heave of 66.31m in javelin throw. He defeated Agustinus Mahuze of Indonesia (61.12m) and LGU Camarines Sur teammate Kenny Gonzales (58.81m).
