The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Thursday, March 23, urged the public to take extra precautions and watch out for common heat-related illnesses which may lead to serious health concerns.
PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon, in a statement, reminded Filipinos to remain vigilant this dry season while enjoying family gatherings, travels, and celebrating fiestas and important events to avoid hospitalization.
“Ang mga sakit na dulot ng sobrang init ay may dalang panganib sa ating mga pamilya partikular sa mga bata kaya naman hinihikayat ng Red Cross ang bawat isa na panatilihin ang pagiging alisto sa kasagsagan ng ating mga summer activities (Illnesses caused by extreme heat pose a danger to our families, especially children, which is why the Red Cross encourages everyone to stay alert during the height of our summer activities),” said Gordon.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the arrival of the “dry season” in the country.
Related to this, the PRC urged the public to practice summer safety tips to reduce the risk of developing heat-induced diseases.
PRC noted that extreme heat could cause heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and water, food, vector, and air-borne diseases such as diarrhea, dengue, measles, influenza, sore eyes, hypertension and blood pressure, chicken pox, food poisoning, heat stroke, sunburn, and prickly heat rash.
To have a problem-free summer, PRC is urging the public to practice the following summer safety tips:
\- Stay hydrated and replenish your water intake often\. Drink water only from safe sources\. If unsure\, boil the water\.
\- Wash hands frequently with soap and water\. Maintain proper hygiene at all times\.
\- Eat only well\-cooked food since under\-cooked food spoils quickly\. Observe proper food handling and storage\.
\- Eat more fruits\, vegetables\, and other nutritious foods\.
\- Apply sunscreen lotions with SPF 30 or greater for skin protection\.
\- Use wide\-brimmed hats and umbrellas when outdoors\.
\- Wear light\-colored cotton clothing\. As much as possible\, limit sun exposure from
11 am until 3 pm.
\- Try to do outdoor activities in the morning or in the late afternoon hours when it’s cooler\.
\- Use mosquito repellent when needed\.
\- Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing\. When blowing your nose\, do it gently\.
\- Remember to avoid direct contact with persons you suspect to be infected\.
