Over 200 women donate blood during women's month celebration in Carigara, Leyte
CARIGARA, Leyte – In support of the National Women's Month Celebration, over 200 women here donated blood in a bloodletting activity organized by the Local Government Unit on Thursday, March 23.
Mayor Eduardo Ong Jr. said they did not expect to exceed their initial target since they invited few women only for the activity.
"It just shows how far we have come in terms of women empowerment and equality,” said Mayor Ong Jr.
He added that it signifies that women can contribute more to society, citing that the donors from various sectors are led by a majority of women legislators in the Sangguniang Bayan.
The blood that will be collected will be turned over to the Philippine Red Cross.
Ma. Gladys Apilado, 55, a teacher from Carigara National High School, expressed pride to be part of an all-women blood donation drive.
"Last year there were only two donors from our school but this time, we are eight because we have relayed our experience and encouraged others to donate blood,” said Apilado.
"It is fulfilling, especially this Lenten Season. If ever you may not be able to extend financial assistance, at least you will be able to save life," she added.
The second-time blood donor felt elated since the LGU's activities highlight women.
"I am very happy, especially from the start of March until now. We have had lots of activities for women. I am grateful that there are changes in equality this time," stressed Apilado.
