Illegally-cut flitches, lumbers seized in Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur; resort owner nabbed
BUTUAN CITY – Combined personnel of Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13) and other law enforcement agencies confiscated fresh illegally-cut flitches, lumbers and furniture during an anti-illegal logging operation in Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur, said a flash report reaching PRO 13 regional headquarters based at Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez here on Wednesday, March 22.

Initial report received at PRO 13 regional command and action center said that most of the confiscated forest products were banned species such as Kamagong, Mancono, Yakal, Mahogany, and Red Lauan. The successful operations led to the confiscation of more than P800,000 worth of undocumented forest products in two separate operations on Tuesday, March 21, field report also stated. Police report said a resort owner was apprehended late Tuesday afternoon by the elements of 1301st Maneuver Company (MC), Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB)13, Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) based in Lianga town, Cagwait Municipal Police Station (MPS), National Bureau of Investigation-Agusan del Sur District Office, and Enforcement Division of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-Caraga). The operation was made in accordance with the search warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court 11th Judicial Region, Branch 46, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur for violation of PD 705 (Forestry Reform Code of the Philippines). Authorities confiscated 120 pieces of Kamagong, Red Lauan, Yakal and Mancono species with a total volume of 3,397.06 bd. ft. worth P509,559; 23 pieces of furniture and novelty items of Mancono species worth P150,500; 12 pieces of Mahogany lumber with a total volume of 64 bd. ft. worth P2,560; and eight pieces of Mancono dining table worth P151,000. Arrested suspect (name withheld pending the arrest of his cohorts) was brought to NBI in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur while the confiscated items were brought to DENR-CENRO in Lianga, Surigao del Sur for proper disposition and filing of charges in court. On the same day, 1303rd MC, RMFB 13, Rosario MPS, and CENRO-Bunawan conducted anti-illegal logging operation in Barangay Bayugan 3, Rosario, Agusan del Sur that resulted in the recovery of 24 pieces of illegally cut Lauan flitches with an approximate volume of 600 bd. ft. and market value of P16,716. Follow up operation is underway to arrest the suspects who fled before the authorities arrived. Meanwhile, PRO 13 Regional Director P/Brig. Gen. Pablo G. Labra II commended the operating units and other law enforcement agencies for the successful operations against illegal logging. “In line with the PNP core value "Makakalikasan,” the PNP Caraga will continue to strictly enforce environmental laws that protect the region's natural resources in partnership with the DENR and other government agencies,” the region’s top police official said. “We also empower our police personnel in preserving and protecting the environment,” Brig. Gen. Labra added.
