QC LGU, DMW ink agreement to protect rights of OFWs
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Maria Susana Ople signed on Wednesday, March 22, a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the protection of rights of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the city.
The city government said the ceremonial signing, held at the Risen Garden, Quezon City Hall, recognizes the local government and the department’s shared responsibilities and commitment for the full protection, promotion and realization of the rights of OFWs and their families.
It also aims to aid in further development of appropriate, effective, and efficient services/programs for them.
"So this is a partnership between the local government unit and the national government for which we are really grateful for,” Belmonte said.
Belmonte said the city has a migrant resource center which serves as a one-stop shop for the needs of the OFWs, including skill training and getting job employment abroad from legitimate agencies.
Ople said their department wants to work closely with the local government units to fight online illegal recruitment and human trafficking.
She also reminded the residents to coordinate with the city government in case they have doubts on any job offers abroad.
Quezon City is the first local government unit to sign a partnership with the DMW.
DMW is mandated to facilitate the overseas employment and reintegration of OFWs. It also promotes the OFW’s empowerment through continuous training and knowledge development.
During the event, the city government also launched the “E-Habilin” online registration portal that aims to provide support and protection to the children left behind by their OFW parents.
The portal will help the city government provide appropriate programs and services for the children of the migrant workers.
Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, officials of the city’s Public Employment Service Office (PESO) and other departments, DMW, PESO Association of Metro Manila, International Labour Organization, and other guests were also present during the event.
