Eating healthy food has loads of benefits. It may even prevent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), said the Healthy Philippines Alliance (HPA) on Tuesday, March 21. In light of the National Women’s Month celebration, HPA urged Filipinas to follow a healthy diet, reiterating that unhealthy eating habits often lead to severe health complications. Latest data showed that at least 72 percent of deaths among Filipinas are caused by NCDs, some of which are cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Citing the global data provided by the NCD Alliance, HPA bared that at least two out of every three women succumb to NCDs worldwide, totaling to at least 19 million mortalities yearly. “We want the numbers to go down for women. A balanced diet is key, which, paired with increased physical activity, greatly contributes to reducing NCDs. Plus, making healthier food choices allows women to holistically look and feel good," said Diabetes Philippines Board Member Leyden Florido. Backing this statement, another organization under HPA called Health Futures Foundation said annual check ups are also necessary to ensure a person’s physical wellbeing. “Women should make a conscious effort to modify their lifestyles and diet. Cut back on excessive refined sugar, salt, trans fat and triglycerides. In addition, have an annual health check up. It is optimal to get screened early rather than detect an NCD at a later stage,"  said Health Futures Foundation Executive Director Rebecca Galvez Tan. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), children, adults, and the elderly are all equally vulnerable to the risk factors of NCDs, may it be from physical inactivity or unhealthy habits.
