DepEd to strengthen PH education sector by hiring, training teachers
Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte stressed the national government’s plan to hire more teachers to ensure that DepEd schools across the country are equipped with qualified and sufficient workforce.
In an ambush interview following the celebration of National Women’s Month at the Quezon City Police District, Duterte once again expressed DepEd's plan to hire more teachers.
"We will have to refer to the spokesperson of DepEd [concerning this year’s hiring target], but we did our recent planning and we will really hire additional teachers every year,” said Duterte in a mix of English and Filipino on Tuesday, March 21.
Apart from hiring additional educators, DepEd is also eyeing to utilize technology to train and equip all of its teaching and non-teaching personnel.
“Hindi naman natin mahire lahat ng pangangailangan natin — [that’s why] the other track that we are pursuing is to amplify the best teachers that we have. Every year merong iha-hire and the other track is to use technology to amplify our best performing teachers (We cannot hire all of our needs, that’s why the other track that we are pursuing is to amplify the best teachers that we have. Every year, teachers will be hired and the other track is to use technology to amplify our best performing teachers),” Duterte reiterated.
Earlier in September 2022, DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa said they are planning to hire 10,000 teachers in 2023.
This, however, was slammed by Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines Deputy Secretary Dana Beltran who reiterated that in order to solve the problems of the Philippine education system and alleviate the burden of teaching personnel, the national government needs to hire 147,000 new educators.
