ILOILO CITY – Ten surviving veterans of World War II were honored during the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Panay, Guimaras, and Romblon Islands last week.

Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Deputy Administrator Assistant Secretary Restituto Aguilar led the distribution of awards at the Balantang Memorial National Shrine here. The oldest awardee was Paciente Torres Tejada of Makato, Aklan. The 102-year-old is among the recipients of the Philippine Liberation Medal and WWII Victory Medal. Another awardee was 101-year-old Dionisio Apresto Arabejo of Anilao, Iloilo. Other awardees were Mauro Mosterio Loresto of Anini-y, Antique; Enrique Palacios Mendoza of Barbaza, Antique; and Leoncio Reyes Perfuma of Pototan, Iloilo, all 99-years-old; Santiago Calohin Caguimbal of Leon, Iloilo, and Pedro Necesito Relles of Lau-an, Antique, both 98; Leon Udani Requintina of San Jose, Antique, and Patricio Gavilan Guevara of Iloilo City, 97; Epifanio Balasa Benlota of Iloilo City, 96. Glenn Castañares of PVAO-Iloilo said veterens George Juaneza and Zosimo Drew Sr. received posthumous awards. Also present during the awarding in Iloilo City were retired Major Gen. Romeo Alamillo, executive vice president of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP), and VFP Regional President Hannibal Lipardo.
