By John Legaspi
For the longest time, the world’s greatest masterpieces have inspired many designers in coming up with their latest collections. From images of majestic sculpture printed on casual wear to couture pieces mirroring the artists’ master skills, fashion imbued with art definitely has its magical way of elevating one’s personal style. This time, many of the world’s iconic paintings find new canvases through wristwatches.
Contemporary timepiece brand Swatch unveils this year the newest chapter of its “Art Journey” collection. Its latest offering feature five capsule collections released from mid-March to May. The entire range is like an adventure through different moments in art history, from Botticelli to Lichtenstein, and it couldn’t be any more signature Swatch if it tried with unexpected details.
Swatch recreates a whopping ten masterpieces in its signature Gent, New Gent, and playfully provocative style, all designed to celebrate artists who were unafraid to try new things.
Swatch pieces from the MoMa, Magritte, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Le Gallerie Degli Uffizi lines
First is the Swatch x MoMA, which celebrates Pop Art and marks the 100th anniversary of American artist Roy Lichtenstein’s birth. The Swatch x Magritte presents tributes to the 125th birth anniversary of Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte. An ode to the beauty of nature and femininity is the Swatch x Le Gallerie Degli Uffizi with its depiction of Renaissance art by supremo maestro Sandro Botticelli. Rounding up the “Art Journey” series is the Swatch x Louvre Abu Dhabi, which unites the energy of “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” by Hokusai with a majestic “Astrolabe.” The Swatch love affair with art started in 1985 with the first of a long line of Art Special watches. Always looking for new ways to democratize the art world, The brand joined forces with world-famous museums to recreate some of their most powerful artworks as part of a new “Museum Journey” series. Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (2018) and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid (2018) were the first venues to open their doors to Swatch, swiftly followed by the Musée du Louvre in Paris (2019), MoMA in New York (2021), and Centre Pompidou in Paris (2022). Swatch is available at the Swatch Shops in SM Megamall, Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 5, Rockwell Power Plant Mall, TriNoma, Alabang Town Center, SM Mall of Asia, SM City North EDSA, SM Southmall, Shangri-La Plaza, Robinsons Place Manila, and SM City Cebu. *To know more about its “Art Journey” collection, visit @swatch\_ph on Facebook and follow @swatch\_ph.* *Hello, readers!
