NNC recognizes 7 LGUs, 5 workers in 2022 Nutrition Awards

Seven local government units (LGUs) along with five workers were recognized by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) during the 2022 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on Monday, March 20. According to the NNC, they were recognized for their outstanding performance in nutrition program management. Apart from the seven LGUs it also conferred awards to one national outstanding barangay nutrition scholar, and four exceptional local nutrition focal points (LNFP). Seven LGUs, namely the Municipality of Tublay, Benguet; Municipality of Talavera, Nueva Ecija; Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; Mabalacat City, Pampanga; Biñan City, Laguna; and the Province of Misamis Occidental were conferred with the prestigious Nutrition Honor Award while Cagayan de Oro City received the 2nd year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award, respectively. NNC said that these LGUs consistently maintained low malnutrition rates in the last five or 6 years through effective and efficient implementation of local nutrition programs. Civil Service Commission Chair Atty. Karlo Alexei B. Nograles gave the keynote address and together with NNC Governing Board Chair Department of Health (DOH) Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire, other members of the NNC Governing Board and NNC Executive Director Assistant Secretary Azucena M. Dayanghirang, led in conferring the awards. "The good practices that enabled these LGUs to perform are having multi-sectoral plans and partnerships, increased investments in nutrition and strong nutrition governance," NNC said in a statement. Vigan City invested in issuing health and nutrition policies with assured funding. Tublay’s multi- sectoral framework called “SHINES” led to having no moderate or severely malnourished children. Talavera’s #SerbisyongDiretsoSaTao is the anchor of its sustained collaboration for planning, implementing, and monitoring nutrition programs. It implemented programs such as Gulayan sa Paaralan, Kusina ng Timog Talavera (school-based feeding program), and carabao milk store “Cremeria Ecijana” provides carabao milk-based products for communities. Biñan City established breastfeeding stations, birthing homes, and a hospital with strengthened community support and barangay playgrounds complemented with multi-sectoral nutrition promotion activities, which lowered malnutrition rates among children. Misamis Occidental has its own provincial nutrition office with complete staff and a strong provincial nutrition committee. The province has an increasing budget for nutrition in the last six years and these are included in the provincial overall development plans. Likewise, Mabalacat City placed importance on workforce development by providing training to community nutrition workers on infant and young child feeding, management of acute malnutrition, and dietary supplementation. Cagayan de Oro City heavily invested in governance and management resulting in improved implementation and delivery of nutrition-related services to the public . Meanwhile, LNFPs are LGU workers who oversee the coordination and management of nutrition programs. The outstanding LNFPs whose work contributed to improved nutrition in their areas of assignment are:

Figuracion, Vigan City, 2021 National Outstanding City Nutrition Action Officer * Dr. Maria Socorro C. Quiñon, Iloilo Province, 2021 National Outstanding Provincial Nutrition Action Officer * Mary Joy J. Gadian, Barangay San Agustin, Tagum City, 2021 National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar NNC conducts the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony every year to recognize and award high-performing LGUs and LNFPs. The awardees undergo a series of evaluation activities to assess their performance by regional and national interagency evaluation teams.
