Angel Canino, Lady Spikers brace for tough stand vs Lady Bulldogs
Rookie Angel Canino is confident that De La Salle will live up to its billing as the top seed so far in six starts when they wrap up their first-round campaign against defending champion National University in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, March 22.

The Lady Spikers remained as the only unbeaten team with a 6-0 card following their four-set win over the Adamson Lady Falcons last March 19. However, La Salle is certain that the match against NU won’t be a breeze just. The Lady Spikers have not won a single head-to-head match against the Lady Bulldogs since March 27, 2019 in the second round of Season 81, which is something that Canino seeks to end. “Asahan niyo ‘yong team namin na lumaban [against NU] kasi Season 84 is a different ballgame and Season 85 sobrang laki ng pinagiba ng team. Asahan niyo lalaban kami, ilalabas namin kung anong meron kami at kung anong pwedeng ilabas as a team and as an individual,” said Canino who carried out a game-high 21 points for La Salle after being under the weather a few days prior to their match. La Salle, which seems to be peaking just in time for its conclusive match against NU, not only had Canino providing the winning boost for the team, but middle blockers Fifi Sharma and Thea Gagate also putting up their season-high individual blocking production. Sharma and Gagate finished with 12 and 16 points, respectively, highlighted by their combined 11 blocks that made up La Salle’s 14 which completely overwhelmed Adamson’s lone block kill. “Actually, ‘yon nga ‘yong lagi naming sinasabi sa kanila kung makukuha natin unang una sa service bago sa block, bakit kailangan pa natin pahirapan ‘yong mga spiker natin. Iyon lang naman lagi kung ano ‘yong strength natin kailangan kapitan natin kung saan tayo nagna-number 1, kami number 1 sa blocking kailangan namin pangatawanan. Number 1 tayo kailangan gawin natin trabaho natin dito sa taas,” said interim head coach Noel Orcullo. With the whole team timely in sync, Orcullo will be capitalizing on their found strengths while exploiting the loophole in their rival’s every move. “As usual, gaya ng ginawa namin in this Adamson game. Hinanapan namin kung ano ‘yong weaknesses and tendencies nila pag naglalaro. Ganoon pa rin naman ’yong sistema andoon pa rin. Patuloy naman namin ini-improve ‘yong bawat isa sa mga bata and the whole as a team,” Orcullo concluded.
