Most of the Covid-19 positive samples that recently underwent genome sequencing were found to be under the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
The Department of Health (DOH) reported that out of the 122 positive samples that were sequenced last Feb. 20 to 24, majority or 121 samples were classified as Omicron subvariants.
Sixty cases were classified as BA.2.3.20, 33 cases were tagged as XBB (including three cases classified as XBB.1.5), eight as XBC, and 20 as other Omicron sublineages, the DOH said.
Of the 60 BA.2.3.20 cases, 59 were local cases from Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and National Capital Region while one case was classified as a returning overseas Filipino (ROF).
Among the 33 recently reported XBB cases, one case was an ROF while 32 were local cases from Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and Caraga.
Newly detected XBC cases were local cases from Mimaropa, Davao Region, and Soccsksargen.
Meanwhile, the lone sample that was not under Omicron had no “lineage assigned,” the DOH said.
The Philippines is set to receive donations of Covid-19 bivalent vaccines from global vaccine-sharing platform Covax Facility.
This type of vaccine is specifically designed to target the Omicron variant and its subvariants, the DOH previously said.
The Covax Facility has committed to donate 1,002,000 doses of bivalent vaccines that are expected to arrive this month, the DOH said.
