Over 12,000 apprehended during exclusive MC lane dry-run on Commonwealth Ave

Over 12,000 motorists have been apprehended during the dry run of the exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Sunday, March 19. Based on the MMDA data, the first day of the dry run on March 9 yielded 337 violators, 276 of them are motorcycle riders while 61 are private motorists.  Under the guideline, motorcycle riders must stay within the exclusive motorcycle lane while private vehicles stay out of it. The highest number of violators were recorded on March 14 with 2,679 violators followed by March 17 with 2,235 violators and March 12 with 2,079 violators. During the duration of the first 10-day dry run, the MMDA said its enforcers apprehended a total of 12,370 violators—9,439 were private motorists while the rest were motorcycle riders. The MMDA clarified that the violators will not be fined but once it is formally implemented, the fine is at P500.  The dry run was supposed to end on Sunday, March 19, but the MMDA opted to extend it for another week to give way to the patching works being undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and to give more time to the motorists to be familiar with the policy. “With another week of dry run, we hope to inform more motorists to avoid confusion before full implementation,” said MMDA chairman Romando Artes. The designated motorcycle lane is located on the third lane from the sidewalk and is aimed to reduce motorcycle-related road crash incidents and ensure smooth traffic flow along Commonwealth Avenue.
