De La Salle survived a first-set hiccup and fended off Adamson the rest of the way for a 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 win in the first round of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday, March 19, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Lady Spikers got over their scrappy opening set before dismantling the Lady Falcons in the last three frames to climb 6-0 in the standings and remain as the lone unbeaten team in the tournament.
Super rookie Angel Canino carried out another impressive performance of 21 points off 20 attacks and an ace laced by 17 excellent receptions.
Middle blockers Thea Gagate and Fifi Sharma added 16 and 12, highlighted by five and six blocks, respectively. Jolina Dela Cruz also chipped in 10 of her own in a total team effort. The Lady Spikers managed to pull away in the fourth set after Canino’s three straight points for a 20-13 advantage. From then on, La Salle kept Adamson out of sight. La Salle also leaned on its defensive scheme after putting up 14 blocks and seven aces compared to Adamson’s one and two, respectively. "Yung first set medyo sobrang shaky nung start namin siguro dahil medyo nangangapa si Angel, ilang days din siya hindi nakapagtraining dahil under the weather so yesterday lang siya nakatraining so nangangapa pa nga," said interim head coach Noel Orcullo on their first set downer. "Pinaalalahanan ko lang naman after ng first set na bumalik dahil kailangan so ayun nagising siguro." Trisha Tubu and Kate Santiago paced Adamson with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as their three-game win streak would be snapped for a 4-2 win-loss record. La Salle will end its first round campaign when it faces defending champion and tormentor National University on Wednesday, March 22, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
