This artist turns everyday wear into canvases for his illustrations
Bench Fashion Week spring-summer 2023 opens with the collaboration collection of clothing brand Human and visual artist TRNZ

Life is all about sharing meaningful moments with the ones we love dearly. It goes beyond the familial bond we have, it involves the strangers we meet, and later on, become friends with. But the thing is, as we grow up and go on to discover what life has to offer, it is inevitable to part ways with some of the brothers and sisters we encountered along the way.
That is the story behind Terence’s (TRNZ) collaboration collection with the clothing brand Human. For its spring-summer 2023 showcase for Bench Fashion Week (BFW), the brand tapped an artist to turn its everyday wear for youth into canvases for art mirroring our life in the digital age.
Dubbed “The Good Friend Circle,” the collection features pieces imbued with TRNZ’s illustrations. The 30-year-old artist is known for incorporating ordinary things in his illustrations that are placed out of context to give a different meaning and create new narratives for the audience to interpret. With Japanese anime as his introduction to the world of art, the TRNZ was able to create colorful scenes surrounding his characters with somber expressions.
“The Good Friend Circle collection features design elements that perfectly evoke our relationship with the people we are with, specifically those we call our constants, regardless of our personalities,” he says. “It also nods to the apparent tragedies brought about by the Internet era and the quintessence of having a few true friends in this day and age.”
Presenting his work at BFW is like a homecoming for TRNZ. He first worked for the Filipino clothing giant as a junior art director, helping it to produce films for its “Love Local” campaigns.
What he showcased on the runway is like the physical manifestation of his artwork. Models paraded with a wandering gaze as if they are looking for connection. Some of his muses are adorned with a pool inflatable like his “Marine” masterpiece. While others are wrapped up in loads of laundry, carrying pillows, and adorned with carton crowns like his “Snowcap,” “Trench,” and “Almost a Promenade” paintings. Clothes have been one of the many ways people build connections. Through the collaboration collection, TRNZ serves wearable reminders that even though our circles of friends are shrinking, sometimes, the best camaraderie we can find is the one we have with ourselves.
