Oil slicks caused by sunken MT Princess Empress have reached the coasts of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI) said in its bulletin on Friday, March 17.
This was confirmed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office on Thursday, March 16, said UP MSI.

"The weakening of Amihan along with the continuous seepage from the site might also bring the oil to the shores of Batangas and Verde Island as stated in Bulletin 7," it added. It also advised communities along Verde Island Passage and Batangas to prepare and report any sighting of oil slicks in their respective areas. Calapan Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Head Dennis Escosora said in a phone call interview with Philippine News Agency that the city government is now on alert after the reported oil slick sighting, particularly in Sitios Villa Antonio and Proper in Barangay Navotas. Spill booms were also already installed by PCG personnel with the hopes of boosting the protection in their area.
