1 dead, 1 hurt after electric posts fall in Malabon
One person died while another was injured after two adjacent electricity posts collapsed and fell on them at the corner of Estrella and Leono Streets in Barangay Tanong, Malabon City on Friday, March 17.
The Malabon City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) said that Jairo Bonus, 30, an Angkas driver, sustained minor leg injuries and was brought to Tondo Medical Center.
His passenger Beverly Medalla, 43, suffered a spinal injury and was rushed to the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center. She later died due to neurogenic shock.
According to the Malabon DRRMO, the posts suddenly fell on the victims at around 3 a.m.
Malabon DRRMO Head Roderick Tongol said line workers from Manila Electric Company (Meralco) arrived at about 8 a.m. in the area to clear the cable wires and remove the posts from the road.
The two posts were reportedly too old, which caused their collapse.
Two buckets of fish products in a fish shop were also damaged during the incident.
Meanwhile, some residents, whose lines were linked to the posts, lost electricity and internet connection.
As of 9:43 a.m., Tongol said the posts have not been removed from the road.
He advised motorists to take alternate routes to avoid traffic.
