As part of the celebration for National Women’s Month in Valenzuela City, the city government held the 2023 Buntis Congress which was attended by 118 expectant mothers on Wednesday, March 15.
The event, which carried the theme “Nanay na Valenzuelano, Ngiting Protektado!” covered various topics for the attendees from the city’s 33 barangays including oral health and dangers of home delivery for pregnant women. It was held at the Valenzuela City Town Hall.
City Health Office Oral Health Program Coordinator Dr. Grace Joguilon, Basic Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (BEmONC) Coordinator Dr. Susan Reyes, and City Health Officer Dr. Marthony Basco attended the event and spoke with the would-be mothers.

Joguilon talked about the importance of having knowledge on the common oral health issues for pregnant women such as tooth decay, tooth erosion, pregnancy tumors, and gingivitis, and how to prevent them. Reyes also taught the participants about different strategies on proper care for newborn babies. Meanwhile, City Health Officer Dr. Marthony Basco assured the residents that the city is taking care of all the residents, including men. He also encouraged the women to apply as barangay health workers after they have given birth while another project is being planned for male residents in June. “Sana po ay maipagpatuloy natin ang mga programang ganito at maikalat ninyo sa mga kaibigan ninyo na kayo po ay alaga dito sa Valenzuela (I hope we can continue programs like these and you can spread the word to your friends that you are taken care of here in Valenzuela),” he said. The participants received souvenir shirts, maternity and wellness care vouchers, while reproductive health product samples and educational pamphlets were also available in the booths of the event's sponsors. Valenzuela City Vice-Mayor Lorie Natividad-Borja, Councilors Louie Nolasco and Chiqui Carreon, and Assistant City Health Officer Dr. Marilyn Liwanag were also present during the event.
