A Grade 9 student from a public school in Dagupan City, Pangasinan was recognized by the Department of Education (DepEd) for winning the bronze medal in the Copernicus Olympiad Global Round - Natural Science Category IV held in Houston, Texas, USA.

Venisce Elisha M. Rodriguez, a student of Science Technology and Engineering at Dagupan City National High School (DCNHS) was among the participants from 20 countries.

“Mahalaga po kasi sa akin ang matuto ng mga bagay higit sa natututunan sa paaralan at ang sukatin ang sarili kong kakayahan base sa international standard at ipakita sa buong mundo na kaya rin ng batang Pilipino makipagsabayan (For me, it's important to learn things beyond what I learn in school and to measure my own abilities based on international standards and show the whole world that Filipino children can keep up,” Rodriguez said.

In the said competition, Rodriguez was the only Filipino who was recognized in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

As one of the participants, Rodriguez had the opportunity to visit the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) headquarters.

For Rodriguez, this became an opportunity to enjoy while learning because of the interaction with fellow students from different countries with the same interest in the field of science.

Ely Rodriguez, the student’s mother, said since he was young, he often told stories about what he read about viruses and bacteria, astronomy, biodiversity, and anything else related to science.

Since then, she noted that his passion for learning, especially in the field of science and technology, became more consistent. His recent win, she added, also symbolizes the resilience and readiness of a Filipino child to participate in any competition and bring honor to the school and country.

“As parents, we are truly proud and happy for him,” she added.

Meanwhile, DCNHS Principal Willy U. Guieb also thanked the parents, teachers, coaches, and all those who supported the student.

“More than the honor that you brought to our school, I am more grateful for your courage and perseverance in pursuing what you have always envisioned for yourself,” Guieb said, noting that DCNHS will “always be one of your pillars of support in your learning journey.”
