'I'm not involved': Party-list solon rues confusion over Teves surname
The other Teves in the House of Representatives is crying foul over his being mistaken for the congressman who is tagged in the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo last March 4.
"As an innocent person, yours truly is not involved in the killing of Governor Degamo but unfortunately my name is being dragged into the issue, which misleads the public," TGP Party-list Rep. Jose “Bong” Teves Jr. said in a privilege speech during plenary session Wednesday afternoon, March 15.
The surname "Teves" has been all over the news lately, but it's that of Negros Oriental 3rd district Rep Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr.
Rep. Arnie, who is out of the country, has not been charged in connection with the Degamo killing, like Rep. Bong, he too can claim innocence.
But the Teves from Bicol claims that this similarity in surname is beginning to affect him and his family.
“Mr. Speaker, I stand before this august body to settle this confusion once and for all dahil (since) even my family is heavily affected by the news. Wala pong kinalaman o koneksyon ang aming pamilya mula sa probinsya ng Catanduanes, Bicol Region sa issue ng pagpaslang kay Governor Degamo ng Negros Oriental (My family from the province of Catanduanes, Bicol Region is neither involved nor connected to the killing of Governor Degamo from Negros Oriental),” he said in his speech.
Rep. Bong sounded mortified as he noted that his own children have been asking whether or not their father had anything to do with Degamo's death.
As such, he appealed to news and media outlets "to be more responsible and careful" in their reporting.
He noted how the media have been simply refering to Rep. Arnie as "Cong Teves", which "confuses the public as to this representation, Rep. Jose "Bong" J. Teves, Jr. of TGP Party-list and from the province of Catanduanes, Bicol Region".
"This incident already happened three times. Sana huwag na maulit (I hope it won't happen again)," the Bicolano said.
According to Rep. Bong, the media should further distinguish the two Teveses by indicating their respective provinces.
“This is to avoid any future incidents as to what my family experienced being the same name of Teves, Mr. Speaker, dahil maraming pagkakataon na magkaka-apelyido tayo pero magkakaiba naman ng probinsya o lugar ng pinagmulan (because there are many instances when we share the same surname but are different when it comes to province or place of origin)," he underscored.
