Clarita Carlos' suggestion could save Pinoys from obesity
Former national security adviser, Prof. Clarita Carlos has offered a simple solution to Filipinos' flab problem: walking it off. But for that to work, there must ample, safe walking spaces constructed for the public. "Too many obese people? PEDESTRIANIZE our roads so people will walk," Carlos wrote in a recent Facebook post, the emphasis on the word her own. It has received over 1,000 reactions as of this writing. Carlos is currently House Speaker Martin Romualdez's chief policy adviser on security and defense concerns. Needless to say, Carlos speaks a lot of sense even when the subject isn't national security. The Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reported in late October 2022 that 27 million Filipinos were overweight or obese. But more worrisome were the Department of Health (DOH) figures, which showed that overweight and obesity among adults grew from 20.2 percent in 1998 to over 30 percent in 2018.
