Stars align in Passi as Team Scottie-Team Japeth showdown takes center stage
PASSI CITY – With the highly entertaining skills challenge and competitive RSJ game serving as appetizers, the attention now shifts to the much anticipated showdown between Team Scottie and Team Japeth in the main event of the 2023 PBA All-Star Weekend at the City of Passi Arena on Sunday, March 12, here.
Tipoff of the showdown which will cap the four-day festivities is at 5:45 p.m. with the must-see dance-off between the two teams happening before the game and the Shooting Stars event raising the curtain at 4:30 p.m.
Joining team captain Scottie Thompson in his crew is head coach Yeng Guiao along with fellow Barangay Ginebra stars Christian Standhardinger, Stanley Pringle, San Miguel Beer’s CJ Perez and Marcio Lassiter, Magnolia’s Mark Barroca and Calvin Abueva, NorthPort’s Arvin Tolentino and Robert Bolick, NLEX’s Kevin Alas and TNT’s Jayson Castro.
Team Japeth, which took a major blow to its roster following the injury to big man June Mar Fajardo, on the other hand, will be relying on familiarity with head coach Tim Cone leading the team along with his Ginebra stars Jamie Malonzo, Nards Pinto and Jeremiah Gray.
Meralco’s Raymond Almazan, who took the spot of Fajardo, will then be joined by teammate Chris Newsome, RR Pogoy of TNT, and Magnolia’s Paul Lee. Rain or Shine’s Gabe Norwood, TNT's Calvin Oftana, Magnolia’s Jio Jalalon and Terrafirma’s Alex Cabagnot will also serve as replacements to injured stars in Aguilar, LA Tenorio, Terrence Romeo and Mikey Williams.
Guiao said he is expecting the game to be on the same intensity of the RSJ game when the usual free-flowing game saw a more competitive approach especially on the defensive end.
He also added that both teams surely hope to reach the balance between providing the highlight plays and entertainment along with giving the fans a quality game to enjoy.
“Tinanong ko sila kung gusto nila manalo sabi nila gusto nila so we want to organize something but at the same time gusto lang namin na ma-facilitate lang yung ball movement but the rest of the time, it is really going to be about their talent and their desire to win,” said Guiao
“Same tone yan actually mag eenjoy kami pag-eenjoyin namin yung sarili namin pero paeenjoyin rin namin yung mga fans by not shortchanging the fans and giving them a sloppy game. We don’t really want a sloppy game,” he added.
