Saint Laurent's newest collection is a reimagination of the 'tailleur-jupe' style
Creative director Anthony Vaccarello blurs the lines between men's and women's fashion
By John Legaspi
In 1966, legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent blessed women with a collection incorporating men’s suiting attitude. Decades after his “Le Smoking” collection, his fashion house continues to blur the lines between men's and women’s fashion. A testament to that is the latest collection of current creative director Anthony Vaccarello for the French fashion house.
Showcased at Paris Fashion Week fall-winter 2023, the womenswear collection is all about the tailleur-jupe style—a potent mix of precision, emotion, and reticence. Gracing the are new blazers with exaggerated shoulders paired with low-cut tank tops. Leather bombers jackets get a feminine touch with sheer tops and tie-neck blouses. Motifs traditionally associated with masculine tailoring such as pinstripes, tartans, and glen plaids are also present on the runway.
Completing the silhouettes of the looks are timeless pieces like slim pencil skirts and cashmere pants for that ultra-luxe vibe. Toward the end of the show is where Anthony showed his play on restraint. A perfect example of this is his elegant evening gown with simple drapery and sheer overlay, making his muse look like a goddess dressed in smoke.
