Here's the story behind the keridas' looks in 'Ten Little Mistresses'
Headpiece and wig artist Jaydee Jasa shares the key visual elements for the mistresses
By John Legaspi
Director-writer Jun Robles Lana’s “Ten Little Mistresses” is a film that celebrates visual style. Every scene of the movie features grand images courtesy of the Esposo mansion and the garbs worn by its cast. One of the things that really set the tone of the movie is the entrance of the mistress. With the “Amakabogera” song playing in the background, it is hard not to think of it as an entrance segment of a beauty pageant, where contestants donned their national costumes. And what really completed the looks of the mistresses are the wigs and headpieces created by Jaydee Jasa.
“By making an initial visual effect, communicating a character's personality, status, or era, and improving the mood of the movie, costumes significantly contribute to the richness of a film's storytelling,” Jaydee says. “Whether it is a period drama, a fantasy movie, or a modern tale, they aid the spectator in empathizing with the characters and their intentions. Moreover, clothes can lend realism and authenticity to a movie, drawing viewers into the narrative and fostering a memorable cinematic experience.”

Moon Young
“Since she is a k-drama enthusiast, I have chosen Korean chopsticks and cherry blossoms as visual elements for all her headpieces. So you will only see Moon young with those elements in the whole movie.”
Coco
“In the script, she was pegged as the sexy athlete. Metal was her visual element like gym equipment. Later in the funeral scene, you will see that I gave her rings which were my version of a deconstructed Olympic logo.”

Aura
“Her visual element is feathers because it symbolizes a connection to the spiritual realm since she is the fortune teller of the group. You will see that she holds a magic ball during the grand entrance, but later for the evening party, she will need to hold a chicken and open lots of gifts, so I made a headdress/case for the ball. During the breakfast scene, she won't have her ball, but you will still see her headdress in the same silhouette as her headdress earlier.”
Lady G
“Their visual element is a wig since the peg was singers Lady gaga and Sia. You will see the progression of their wig slowly revealing their face up until the end where Lady no longer has a wig. Lady G is the only one with a ribbon since their character has a surprise reveal in the movie.”

Because
“Because’s character in the script was pegged to be a greek Goddess. Usually, Greek gods use one long fabric for their whole wardrobe. So for Because, you will see her headdresses are all the same material as her costume and it looks like a continuation of her costume.”
Sparkle
“I simply took inspiration from her name and so all her headdresses are a mixture of all sequins, glitters, rhinestones, foil, and other materials that are shiny and sparkly.”

“Since Diva was being a copycat to Helga, you will see Diva’s headdresses are just a deconstructed version of Helga’s headdresses.”

Babet
“Being the jeweler, Babet will always look as if her headdresses are items that she owns from her jewelry stores.”
Magenta
“She was the first mistress. The inspiration was from queens, fairy godmothers, and all other strong First Lady symbols.” *To know more behind-the-seams stories of the costumes featured in “Ten Little Mistresses,”*[*click here*](https://mb.com.ph/2023/03/02/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-looks-in-ten-little-mistresses-film/)*.* - - -

In “Ten Little Mistresses,” Jaydee and his team created over 40 headdresses, eight wigs and 10 wings for the mistresses, five stewardess hats, one wig and two fascinators for Lilith, and around 25 fascinators for the maids. He also adds that 13 of the mistresses’ headdresses are made on set a day before the scene. To know more about the creative choices for the costumes of the mistresses, Manila Bulletin chats with Jaydee as he shares the stories and details of each lavish look.
