The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said that the two completed flood control structures along Porac River in Pampanga ensure the protection of the low-lying and flood-prone communities.
Local residents were compelled to seek safer shelters in higher grounds as Porac River tends to overflow during typhoons and heavy rains of long duration.
In a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller Tolentino said that the slope protection works at the river’s Jalung and Pio sections, built in the amount of P48 million and P19.77 million respectively boost the earning capacity of the public as the threat of heavy flooding during torrential rains is minimized.
The Jalung section slope protection is a 482 lineal-meter concrete river wall with a steel sheet pile foundation to prevent scouring of the existing earth dike nearby while minimizing the impact of flooding in the farm lands and residential areas.
On the other hand, the new 188-lineal-meter concrete revetment in Barangay Pio was built close to the completed river wall in Barangay Jalung to augment the existing flood control structures in safeguarding flood prone areas near the river.
Both projects were implemented by the DPWH Pampanga Second District Engineering Office (DEO) with funding sourced from the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2022.
